National Motorcycle Museum & Motorcycle Live 2025 - a grand day out!

MikeyG & I went for a trip to Brum on Weds 19th Nov, came back Friday evening. A brilliant few days away! We stayed (again) at the White Lion Inn - Hampton in Arden (wonderful pub). Such an lovely village location - and only ~10mins from the Motorcycle Museum and the NEC!

First night (Weds) noshed at the excellent Soho Tavern - curry to die for! Second day (Thurs) I went to the Museum, in the morning, and bike show afternoon. Mike was volunteering for Mental Health Motorbike at the bike show. Evening meal at the pub - and delicious it was too! Friday we both hit the bike show.

Highlights were: I got a chance to sit on an absolutely stunning Brough Superior SS100 (worth a cool £0.5M). Had a good chat to Honda about their new CB1000GT (I recon the most popular bike at the show) - looking good - need to book a test ride next year. Mike thought the Kawasaki Z900RS was a thing of great beauty! We drooled over the Bimota stand - pure gorgeous exotica! The Moto Action Show was incredible (Freestyle Motocross) amazing riding & we got a chance to chat with one of the riding heroes afterwards.

Photos HERE - enjoy!

Honda CB1000GT - the Fireblade powered sport-tourer we've been waiting for!

Sports touring with the heart of a Hornet - the Honda CB1000GT arrives for 2026. A high-speed, high-comfort sports tourer aimed squarely at riders who want one bike to do it all.

The CB1000GT takes the CB1000 Hornet as its base, adds touring legs, and turns up the spec sheet to eleven. Power comes from a retuned 1,000cc inline-four, which can trace its DNA back to the CBR1000RR Fireblade. In GT trim, it’s producing 147.6 bhp at 11,000 rpm and 75 lb ft of torque at 8,750 rpm.

Wow - I really like the look of this! The love child of a CB1000RR Fireblade & NT1100 - what a fabulous thing! MikeyG & I are off to Motorcycle Live @ The NEC later this month - I'm making a bee-line straight for this bike!

UPDATE 281125: MCN - 2026-on Honda CB1000GT review: Honda’s tall rounder is the complete package for sporty touring.

Revamped Motorcycle Live show at Birmingham’s NEC welcomes almost 90,000 visitors in 2024

Thousands of bikers descended on Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC) for this year’s rejuvenated Motorcycle Live show – now featuring more stages, additional stunt shows, and an evening of live musical entertainment.

Kicking off on Saturday, November 16, the show concluded on Sunday, November 24 – welcoming in 43 motorcycle manufacturers including established players like Ducati, BMW, and Suzuki, as well as smaller concerns such as CCM, Paton, and Ohvale.

“Because there’s so much new stuff in there, you don’t really know what to expect as an organiser, but I’m pleased to say the changes have been properly embraced by the visitors,” Managing Director, Finlay McAllan said.

MikeyG & I drove up to Brum on Weds 20th Nov, back on Friday 22nd. We stayed at one of my favourite places: The White Lion Inn, Hampton in Arden. Thursday Mike was volunteering for Mental Health Motorbike @ MCL - so I went to the National Motorcycle Museum. Friday - we both went to MCL. We go up most years - usually a great trip, lots of interesting things to see & opportunities to part with hard earned... They've revamped the show for 2024 - did a good job of it too. Better grub & drinks, live music. The stands (manufacturers & retailers) were good. I was particularly keen on Honda's GB350s & CB1000 SP Hornet. Mike was very taken with the Honda rolling road demo of their Dual Clutch gearbox in the NT1100. We had a blast on the electric bike test ride zone - I rode the Kawasaki Ninja EV - which was a great bike! All in a very enjoyable few days away c/w excellent curry & a few swift arves :0). Cold / snowy trip & could have done without the cold that's been troubling me for the last few weeks - but "ho hum"! Photos HERE - enjoy! :0).

Motorcycle Live 2022 NEC Birmingham - back on form again!

Organisers of the annual Motorcycle Live show are celebrating a highly successful 2022 event following nine busy days at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC).

Showcasing 52 motorcycle manufacturers across three halls, plus opportunities to take test rides both on the surrounding roads and a dedicated indoor off-road Adventure Experience, just under 90,000 visitors attended from November 19-27.

Speaking to MCN on the Monday of the event, Managing Director, Finlay McAllan said: “We have to consider 2022 to be our new Year One because last year was an anomaly because we had a bump in the road with Omicron and temporary face masks. The motorcycle industry we saw in 2019 doesn’t exist anymore.”

He continued: “On the first Saturday I tried to go down to the back of hall four and had to give up in the end because the aisles were so busy.”

MikeG & I went up on Sunday 20th, stayed @ a Premier Inn, dined @ TGIF, breakfasted @ McDonalds & attended the show on Monday 21st. We got there before opening, & left at kicking out time! A long, exhausting but fantastic day! The 2021 show was a bit lacklustre (just after lockdown) less halls, less / smaller stands, fewer visitors. This year was a corker - as good a MCL as I've ever attended :0). My favourite stand was Norton - brilliant to see the effort that TVS are putting into this wonderful marque - classic beauty in the Commando 961, and state of the art in V4CR. Mike was particularly stricken by the Triumph stand, and their modern classics range. Click here to see some photos from our visit.

Motorcycle Live visit - Monday 6th Dec 2021

There was no bike show in 2020 - aaagh! So here in 2021 - we were really pleased that Motorcycle Live is back in the calendar! 3 of us (Jeff, Mike & me) drove (cheers Jeff!) up to Brum on Sunday & spent the evening at a reasonably comfortable Premier Inn. Din dins was at TGIF.

On (a cold & rainy) Monday morning, after a stop off at McDonald's for breakfast, we set off for the NEC. Car parking was a nightmare - as several of their car parks were blocked off!

The MCL bike show was smaller than usual - COVID I suppose... Some missing exhibitors, some reduced size stands. That said, we were really glad to go up! COVID security was well thought out - which was good.

My favourite was the Norton stand, great to see them back (no thanks to Stuart Garner, but HUGE thanks to TVS). Honestly, look at the V4CR - what a thing of beauty! No price yet, but with all that CNC & carbon - it's not gonna be cheap...

Wonderful to see BSA are back too - well done to Mahindra for investing in this classic marque!

Motorcycle Live (Birmingham NEC) dates now confirmed as 4-12 December 2021 - fingers crossed!

The UK’s biggest motorcycle show, Motorcycle Live in association with Bikesure Insurance, plans to be back better than ever in 2021, with dates now confirmed as 4-12 December,  at the NEC, Birmingham.

To have the date confirmed in the midst of such uncertainty, underlines the show’s commitment to returning to not only a physical show, but one where the halls of the NEC are brimming with entertainment, interaction, manufacturers, retailers and motorcycles of all shapes, ages, engine types and sizes.

The halls will house regular interactive features and displays along with brand new entertainment to give a full and fantastic day out to visitors.

With the pandemic having cast a cloud over the UK for so long, organisers are keen to give two wheel fans something to look forward to, whilst ensuring the event is safe for all.

By bringing together the very best of the industry under one roof, where people can interact face-to-face and see, touch, feel and hear, in person, rather than just digitally, will give a welcomed return to ‘social’. And whilst biking brings many mental health benefits, meeting your friends and family, and sharing your passion will no doubt be a much-needed boost for many.

“We’re excited to welcome visitors back to The NEC, for what is already shaping up to be a fantastic show.  To be able to offer something to look forward to will see us end the year on a high – where once again two wheel fans can be together to soak up the first major show in the UK for two years.  The 2021 event promises a real treat – something everyone deserves.” said Finlay McAllan, Managing Director of Motorcycle Live. Basic bike skills & off road primer - from BMW Off Road Skills

During COVID times we couldn’t visit Motorcycle Live at the NEC Birmingham. Instead we decided to re-enact our traditional Motorcycle Live demonstration at our home ground at Walters Arena on a wet and windy day in November.

Watch on for a tiny taste of some of the lessons you might cover on some of the different courses we run. Whether you’re riding off-road for the first time or wanting to take your skills to the next level, the BMW Off Road Skills team have got you covered!

This is a brilliant 24 minute video. I've been riding since I was 17 (so a long time!) and have learned skills from this short video. You are never too old to learn - gotta keep an open mind...

NEC Bike show: 2020 Motorcycle Live show postponed until November 2021

Motorcycle Live organisers have this morning announced that the 2020 show has been postponed until November 2021, following coronavirus safety concerns for visitors and the industry workers at the event.

Taking place annually at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC), the 2020 show was due to take place between November 21 and 29. This has now been pushed back to 20-28 November 2021.

Speaking in a statement, event Managing Director, Finlay McAllan, said: "Motorcycle Live is all about audience interaction, meeting with friends, climbing onto all the latest machines and trying on the all latest gear.

"Many of us use it as an annual pilgrimage to meet with friends and family and enjoy a great day out together. And it’s not just the public who join us each day – we, alongside our industry colleagues - look forward to the event every year too," he continued.

"Therefore, as you can imagine, the decision to postpone this year’s show has not been taken lightly. Our concern for the safety of our visitors, exhibitors and industry colleagues is at the heart of this decision.

"As with any hard decision, we looked at it with a number of different perspectives and factored in various scenarios and restrictions that could be imposed," the statement added.

I've seen everything now: Honda Goldwing recovery vehicle - towing a car!

The tow bike operates under a special order granted by the Department for Transport after satisfying stringent road testing by the Vehicle Certification Agency and plays a significant role in rapid road clearance.

The PR5 was on hand to capture the demonstration - lamentably the PA was actually this inaudible even to bystanders, but you can hear the clarity of sound from the mechanics of the demonstration.

I think the Honda Gold Wing is an incredible bike & have had a soft spot for them since the '80s. I had an opportunity to ride the new model last year, which I loved, but it's pots of dough: so probably not... Also as it's a bit of a beast, it wouldn't make a great everyday bike - but for serious two up touring it'd be fantastic!

These videos (1 & 2) show just how much power there is in that magnificent 1800cc flat-six engine. No-one wants to break down, but:
