May God Bless & keep us safe in 2021. Happy New Year! xxx

Should old acquaintance be forgot

And never brought to mind

Should old acquaintance be forgot

And auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll take a cup of kindness yet

For auld lang syne

We two have paddled in the brook

From morning sun till dine

But seas between us broad have roared

Since auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll take a cup of kindness yet

For auld lang syne

And there's a hand my trusty friend

And give us a hand o' thine

We'll take a cup of kindness yet

For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear

For auld lang syne

We'll take a cup of kindness yet

For auld lang syne

Windows 7: A year after the end-of-support deadline, millions choose not to upgrade

A year after Microsoft officially ended support for its long-running OS, a small but determined population of PC users would rather fight than switch. How many? No one knows for sure, but that number has shrunk substantially in the past year.

On the eve of Microsoft's Windows 7 end-of-support milestone, some analytics experts were consulted and it was calculated that the owners of roughly 200 million PCs worldwide would ignore that deadline and continue running their preferred OS.

Still running Windows 7? Wanna know why this is a terrible idea?...

"GCHQ has warned people not to do internet banking or use emails from computers with Windows 7 from 14th Jan 2020, when Microsoft will end support for the software".

Also in business if you are hacked (etc) and are found to be running an unsupported Operating System - it is likely that your business insurance would be invalidated, and the ICO would be likely to have a serious word with you... DO NOT RISK IT!

Brexit: European travel 2021 and beyond...

What will the rules be for British people who want to travel to the EU from 1 January 2021? We already know some of the details but will there be any additional agreements on things like social security or vehicle insurance? And will there be any detail on any arrangement to replace the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?

Answer: UK nationals will need a visa if they want to stay in the EU more than 90 days in a 180-day period. They will still be able to use their EHICs which will remain valid until they expire. The UK government says they will be replaced by a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), but there are no further details yet on how to obtain it.

EU pet passports will no longer be valid, but people will still be able to travel with pets, following a different and a more complicated process.

The two sides agreed to co-operate on international mobile roaming, but there is nothing in the agreement that would stop UK travellers being charged for using their phone in the EU and vice versa.

The government also says British citizens will not need an International Driver's Permit to drive in the EU (unless they still have a paper licence or a licence from the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey or Gibraltar). But they will need to carry a Green Card to prove they have the right vehicle insurance.

Don’t Stop Me Eatin’ by LadBaby - supporting the Trussell Trust

First The Beatles did it. Then The Spice Girls. Now LadBaby has launched his bid to score three successive UK Christmas number one singles.

The latest is Don't Stop Me Eatin', his take on Journey's Don't Stop Believin'.

It's raising funds for food bank charity The Trussell Trust, and he said this is "our most important year yet".

Money raised from this charity single will allow The Trussell Trust to support more than 14M people in the UK living below the poverty line. This winter, food banks are expecting to give out an emergency parcel every 9 seconds, the money raised from this single will help support the The Trussell Trust and their mission to create a #HungerFreeFuture

Looking for a new Telly? Better read this: DHS Looking Into Cyber Risk from TCL Smart TVs

The acting head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the agency was assessing the cyber risk of smart TVs sold by the Chinese electronics giant TCL, following reports last month in The Security Ledger and elsewhere that the devices may give the company “back door” access to deployed sets.

Speaking at The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf said that DHS is “reviewing entities such as the Chinese manufacturer TCL.”

“This year it was discovered that TCL incorporated backdoors into all of its TV sets exposing users to cyber breaches and data exfiltration. TCL also receives CCP state support to compete in the global electronics market, which has propelled it to the third largest television manufacturer in the world,” Wolf said, according to a version of prepared remarks published by DHS. His talk was entitled “Homeland Security and the China Challenge.”

Our LG 42" TV recently went on the blink - the backlight packed up, but otherwise was working fine. LG wanted £329 to repair a 6 year old telly! I have today just ordered a replacement from the brilliant Richer Sounds for - wait for it - the same £329, with a 6 year warranty!

Caveat emptor: Smart TVs connect to your network. In IT there is a saying, "if you have physical access to something, you own it". Now imagine a dodgy Chinese TV sitting attached to your network - what could possibly go wrong?... With any IT device - you are always best off sticking to reputable vendors than some cheap "Harry Nibble" brand.

At Christmas time: spare a thought for man's best friend

Dogs Trust: We created our slogan A dog is for life, not just for Christmas® over 40 years ago to remind people to only get a dog when they are truly ready for the lifelong commitment.

Owning a dog is a wonderful experience bringing years of companionship, fun and love. But it doesn’t always turn out as expected. We’re here to look after dogs that need us, which may sadly be the case for many dogs after Christmas is over. We’ll love and care for those dogs until they find their forever home; but wouldn’t it be wonderful if we can support more people in responsible dog adoption so that all dogs’ forever homes aren’t so far away.

No puppy should be born to be smuggled. Not at Christmas. Not ever.

Our new animation tells the story of a puppy, imported into the country illegally to meet the demand in the UK. Thousands of smuggled pups are sold online each year to unsuspecting dog lovers.

We need your help to change the tale for smuggled puppies and be there for the dogs who need us most.

Calli wishes all of you a very Merry Christmas!

Please consider supporting Dogs Trust, Healing Paws Rescue or another animal charity. Dogs are a very special part of God's creation. Let us show these beautiful creatures the Love that God shows to us.

Microsoft and McAfee headline newly-formed 'Ransomware Task Force'

A group made up of 19 security firms, tech companies, and non-profits, headlined by big names such as Microsoft and McAfee, have announced on Monday plans to form a new coalition to deal with the rising threat of ransomware.

Named the Ransomware Task Force (RTF), the new group will focus on assessing existing technical solutions that provide protections during a ransomware attack.

The RTF will commission expert papers on the topic, engage stakeholders across industries, identify gaps in current solutions, and then work on a common roadmap to have issues addressed among all members.

The end result should be a standardized framework for dealing with ransomware attacks across verticals, one based on an industry consensus rather than individual advice received from lone contractors.

In other news: The US Federal Bureau of Investigations says it is aware of incidents where the DoppelPaymer ransomware gang has resorted to cold-calling companies in order to intimidate and coerce victims into paying ransom demands.

Sony is pulling Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store and offering full refunds

Sony is pulling Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store and offering full refunds for anyone who bought the game from the digital storefront, the company said on Thursday. If you want to start the refund process now, Sony says to visit this site and sign into your PlayStation account to submit a request.

However, later on Thursday evening, Sony said it is “aware some users are experiencing issues” accessing the refund form. If you’re seeing issues, you may want to try again later.

Cyberpunk 2077 has already been removed from the PlayStation Store for a few Verge staffers on their PS5s, and the game doesn’t come up in a search for “Cyberpunk 2077” on the web version of the store. Following older, online listing links to the game will show its store page, but with the option to wish list it only.

Players have found that Cyberpunk 2077, which has only been out for a little more than one week, has been riddled with bugs. And while game looks and performs well in backwards compatibility mode on the PS5, it is prone to routine crashes and a number of distracting visual glitches. On PS4, however, the game fares a lot worse - Eurogamer reported poor performance, low framerate, and texture pop-in.

There are 2 types of people in the world: those who have lost data & those who will loose data!

WHAT IS BACKUP? A backup is a second copy of all your important files - for example, your family photos, home videos, documents and emails. Instead of storing it all in one place (like your computer), you keep another copy of everything somewhere safe.

Why should I bother to back up my data?

Hardware can break, get coffee spilt in it, lost, stolen, hacker attack, malware, ransomware, etc…
Hardware can easily be replaced. Recreating your data is NOT easy, and is likely to be impossible!
It is estimated that 70-80% of businesses that suffer a serious data loss, fail within 18 months.

What do I need - to do a basic Backup?

1) Something to backup to: a high quality Hard Drive or USB Flash Drive.

2) Instructions: contact Donline.

Calli's pre-Christmas wash & brush up!

It never ceases to amaze me: the positive effect on Calli from a visit to Pam's Poochy Parlour.

When Calli's fluff is long, she seems to slow down a bit and act older than her years.

After a wash & brush up, she's like a pup once more - full of playful energy!

Wish a haircut had that effect on me!

Well there has to be some benefit to all that rain!

Raining in front of our house - sunny round the back.

So we get this result - enjoy!

And as usual, the little stream that runs through our part of Denmead is doing a fab job of getting rid of the rainwater. Gotta admire those village planners :0).

Reds under the beds? Actually the Ruskies are a lot more widespread than that...

Concern is gathering over the effects of the backdoor inserted into SolarWinds' network monitoring software on Britain's public sector – as tight-lipped government departments refuse to say whether UK institutions were accessed by Russian spies.

As reported in the small hours of this morning by The Register, it appears the downloads page for SolarWinds' Orion Windows monitoring platform was altered by Kremlin hackers – known as APT29, aka Cozy Bear – so that victims fetched and installed a tampered-with version that included a remote-control backdoor.

This malicious code was detailed by FireEye, which itself said it was earlier hacked by state-level miscreants. Said victims of the Orion job are said to include the Treasury and the Dept of Commerce at the US government. It now also looks like the Department of Homeland Security has also been breached! It's not clear at this stage whether FireEye was also hacked via a dodgy Orion install.

Research by The Register has shown that SolarWinds' Orion is used widely across the British public sector, ranging from the Home Office and Ministry of Defence through NHS hospitals and trusts, right down to local city councils.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top national security agencies confirmed Tuesday (5 Jan 2021) that Russia was likely responsible for a massive hack of U.S. government departments and corporations, rejecting President Donald Trump’s claim that China might be to blame.

iPhone factory workers riot over unpaid wages in India

Workers at one of Apple’s three iPhone assembly plant rioted on Saturday evening over unpaid wages.

Local media report that around 2,000 staff protested at not having been properly paid for months, and that iPhones may have been looted and the factory damaged.

The factory only opened in August 2020 and is thought to assemble the iPhone SE and iPhone 12, mostly for export consumption as Apple’s highly-priced products have tiny market share in India.

Apple outsources Indian iPhone assembly to Taiwanese company Wistron, which in turn outsourced recruitment and payroll to Indian companies. The Indian companies stand accused of not paying staff promptly or properly for several months. Wistron’s plant is near the city of Bengaluru, a tech hub in which the cost of living is high by Indian standards.

World in panic (!) as Google slides off the face of the internet

Google services such as YouTube and Gmail started the week with an almighty bang as their cloud came crashing to the ground today (Mon 14th Dec 2020).

Despite an insistence from the company's various health dashboards that all was fine and dandy, it most definitely was not.

Those seeking distraction in video form were treated to YouTube's "Something went wrong..." monkey, while others wishing to express their disquiet via Gmail were shown a 502 code or a suggestion to try again in five minutes.

Problems seemed to start at around 11:30 GMT. At time of writing YouTube was inaccessible, Gmail was borked, Drive was down, image search failed (unless an error code was what you were looking for), and Docs didn't seem happy.

Google is no stranger to outages. Pretty much everything from GCP to G Suite fell over into a heap back in August.

SolarWinds admits product updates were subverted by nation state while FireEye warns exploit is rampant

SolarWinds' "Orion" IT monitoring platform has been compromised, and speculation is swirling that it was used in attacks on major US government agencies that could also be linked to last week's revelation that FireEye's top hacking tools have been accessed.

A statement from Kevin Thompson, SolarWinds president and CEO, said the company is "aware of a potential vulnerability which if present is currently believed to be related to updates which were released between March and June 2020 to our Orion monitoring products."

"We believe that this vulnerability is the result of a highly sophisticated, targeted and manual supply chain attack by a nation state. We are acting in close coordination with FireEye, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the intelligence community, and other law enforcement to investigate these matters. As such, we are limited as to what we can share at this time."

The Importance of Jesus: "One Solitary Life" - in video

On July 11, 1926, James Allan Francis – a pastor and author – delivered a sermon to the Baptist Young People’s Union in Los Angeles.

His stirring message ended with an unforgettable description of the life of Jesus. Francis’s words soon took on a life of their own. They were published and circulated widely, and today, nearly a century later, the impact of this short essay still resounds throughout the world.

We are honoured to share this short film adaptation of ONE SOLITARY LIFE.

A life that not many understand (by an anonymous biker)

I own a motorcycle because of a personal life choice.

I get wet, I get cold, And I get hot.

I've been afraid, I've even hurt myself.

But also, I laughed out loud with the wind.

I've spoken a thousand times with myself and with God. I still do.

I have sung and I have shouted like a madman, and I have felt deep gratitude that's made me cry.

I have made curves that the champions would be proud of; and yes, a few full of terror...

I have seen wonderful places because of my motorcycle.

And I have stopped to see magical landscapes that filled my heart with wonder.

Because of my motorcycle I have met strangers who share the spirit of the ride, people who have taught me many things.

My bike is not just a means of transportation, it's iron and wheels that blesses me in indescribable ways; it's part of who I am.

One day when I am very old and when I cannot ride anymore, I look forward to memories that only riders know...

Memories made in the exhilaration of facing the wind!

Stop the BBC producing new program “Will my puppies make me rich?”

BBC Three has commissioned a new program called “Will My Puppies Make Me Rich?”. The film will follow young dog breeders as they try to build their businesses and make them reputable.

The show hasn’t been aired yet so we don’t know what kind of angle it’s going to portray - but anything that promotes animals as commodities to make money from is absolutely disgraceful.

The show says it has an emphasis on “puppies for life and not just for lockdown”. Unfortunately there are people who will watch this show as a ‘how-to-guide’ to buy dogs solely for the purpose of breeding and making money. Dogs used for breeding often lead miserable lives, locked in crates being bred from until they’re dead. The puppies also often end up dying due to bad husbandry.

The show will highlight so called “designer dogs” promoting the buying of dogs, many of whom have been bred to have a certain aesthetic. This leads to painful health conditions; flattened skulls, compressed spinal cords, extreme breathing difficulties, eye and ear problems to name a few.

There are thousands of dogs in shelters needing homes, we do not need a program that promotes breeding and selling puppies as a get rich quick scheme or a career.

I am not suggesting the people involved in this show are neglecting their own animals, but they are promoting an animal welfare pandemic.

Please sign this petition to urge the BBC to not produce and air this show. Thank you.

New Royal Enfield Meteor 350 launched in Europe - coming to the UK in 2021!

Royal Enfield has officially unveiled their new small capacity, single-cylinder cruiser, the Meteor 350 as a European model, mixing old-school charm that the brand characterises with a nuances of modern day engineering and tech, all in an affordable package with prices starting at £3749 for the base version of the three variants.

Developed in unison between the firm’s two technical centres in Chennai, India and Bruntingthorpe in the UK, the bike was revealed in India just last month. The 349cc SOHC air-oil cooled machine is the first Euro 5 emission regulation compliant motorcycle from the Eicher Motors-owned company, and it replaces the outgoing and non-conforming, long-lived, air-cooled 499ccc singles.

The new 4-stroke motor produces a peak power of 20.2bhp @ 6100rpm while peak torque is 19.9lb.ft (27Nm) @ 4000rpm, which point towards city riding and short hops as opposed to longer distance cruising or speeds of more than 70mph. The engine is hooked-up to a 5-speed gearbox as well as a balancer shaft so you can have your share of solo-cylinder thumpiness but thankfully with limited vibes. Economy-wise, the Meteor 350 is as frugal as Scrooge himself, churning out an expected 100mpg.

One of my favourite hymns: Restore O Lord

Restore, O Lord
The honor of Your name
In works of sovereign power
Come shake the earth again
That all may see
And come with reverent fear
To the living God
Whose kingdom shall outlast the years

Restore O Lord by Graham Kendrick and Chris Rolinson, was originally recorded for 1981's The King is Among Us. It has been re-recorded for 2011's The Very Best of Graham Kendrick.

With a song back catalogue that's bursting with classics, you'd be forgiven for not remembering just how many loved and time tested worship songs have been penned by Graham Kendrick. He's inspired a generation of worshippers and shown a strength of commitment to the worship of the church that can not be overlooked.

The Very Best Of Graham Kendrick (Knowing You Jesus) features classic songs such as Amazing Love, Meekness & Majesty, Is Anyone Thirsty?, Knowing You and Servant King are given a fresh lease of life by beautiful new arrangements and recordings. Including duets with Matt Redman, Darlene Zschech, Martin Smith and Paul Baloche.

Oh dear, here we go again - Bitcoin is on the up once more. People with money to burn - form an orderly queue!

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency and worldwide payment system. Bitcoin was created in 2009 as an open source project developed by one or more unknown developers called “Satoshi Nakamoto”. The system allows users to send transactions directly from person to person, cutting out the middleman. This allows transactions to be faster, have lower cost, and be anonymous. Due to the logic behind Bitcoin, there can only ever be produced, or mined, 21 million Bitcoins. The price is a calculated average from different markets.

What could be more cool than the Windows Snipping tool? How about it's functionality from a keyboard shortcut!

We are testing a new process for delivering new feature improvements to our customers outside of major Windows 10 feature updates. Through the Windows Feature Experience Pack, we can improve certain features and experiences that are now developed independently of the OS. Currently, only a limited number of features are being developed this way, so we are starting out very scoped. By testing this process first with Windows Insiders, we hope to expand the scope and the frequency of releases in the future. Eventually, Windows Feature Experience Pack updates will get folded into the already existing servicing process for Windows 10 and delivered to customers that way through Windows Update.

Today, we are releasing Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.1070.0 to the Beta Channel. This update includes the following improvements:

Based on Insider feedback, you can now use the built-in screen snipping experience in Windows (WIN + SHIFT + S) to create a snip of your screen and paste it directly into a folder of your choice in File Explorer to save the screenshot there. Try it out!

Using the touch keyboard in a portrait posture on a 2-in-1 touch device now supports split keyboard mode.

Business Email Compromise scammer attacks - be aware & stay safe

BEC or Business Email Compromise hacking is one of the most common types of cyber-attack, which the FBI says costs more than £6 billion a year - and experts say Nigeria is its epicentre.

Cyber reporter Joe Tidy speaks with one BEC hacker in Nigeria to find out how they work, and how he feels about his victims.

If you want to know just how low these BEC scammers go, have a look at this article - where a foodbank was scammed out of nearly $1m. Despicable.

Honda's updates to the CB1000R for 2021

Neo Sports Café has evolved. Starting with the CB1000R; completely restyled, from the sleek headlight, to the newly redesigned aluminium subframe, with an individual and aggressive character. And for an even more hand-crafted look, the CB1000R Black Edition is the epitome of style through its individual design.

So, Honda have updated my bike. Most of the bike is the same, many of the tweaks are OK, but a bit "meh". However, where I think the 2021 model is a definite improvement is in the LCD dash. The current version works well - but the new version is clearer, customisable & allows headset / smartphone integration. Oooo, dash envy!
