‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’ (Acts 1.8, ESV)
This Sunday the Church in the West celebrates Pentecost. It’s inspiring to read the account of Jesus’ followers receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit and spilling out into the streets of Jerusalem, declaring ‘the mighty works of God’ and being understood by speakers of every language (Acts 2).
It’s a great reminder that believers today have the same gift of the Holy Spirit and no matter how stony the ground might appear to be, we too have the power to witness to others about ‘the mighty works of God’. This is a gift we have as both individuals and as a body of believers, the Church.
In fact, Pentecost is often described as the birthday of the Church – but is that correct? Digging in to the history and significance of Pentecost, this is something Neil Rees considers in his interesting article, 'Was Pentecost the birthday of the Church?'
