Child of Hope, Uganda is a Christian-based charity making huge improvements for slum children and their families from its schools in Eastern Uganda – by providing free education, healthcare and welfare to kids from the poorest and most vulnerable families. A new video from Child of Hope Uganda: "This is where we live"

Check out this new 5-minute video in which Child of Hope primary pupils show us their homes, cooking and chores.

Every day we all turn on the taps and flick on the lights without much thought. With that in mind, this month we have a new video showing the day to day lives of our pupils in the slum. It gives a fascinating insight into some of the challenges they face in everyday life - and how amazingly well they cope!

Child of Hope Uganda - a new video tour of the school

Child of Hope makes huge social impact for the poorest and most vulnerable slum children and their families from its schools in Eastern Uganda. Please consider supporting Child of Hope.

Our work takes place in the Namatala slum near Mbale, where we have built our nursery/primary school and secondary school. Up to 30,000 people live there, many are internally displaced people (IDPs) from the north. Around half the population is school age but poverty prevents most of them going to school.

We love telling our stories through pictures and video. All these short films star our kids... part of what we want to achieve is to give them a voice. Enjoy!

We're in December: so it's time for Child of Hope's new Christmas videos!

It’s that time of year again - the Child of Hope Christmas Party is fast approaching! 

The children have been working hard to bring you a Christmas extravaganza this year - a hilarious nativity video each day for 11 days, starting on Dec 1.

Every year we aim to bring a little Christmas joy to the whole community surrounding Child of Hope, including our students and their siblings, parents, invited guests and community leaders - after all, it would be unfair to keep all the fun to ourselves!

Could you donate to help us put on the party? It would help to provide food, drink, a present for the children and a fantastic party for around 1,300 people who live in one of the poorest places on Earth. This will be the best meal they have all year for some of them it may be the first proper meal they have had since the last Christmas party. A Child of Hope video: Mary's story

 

Mary is a Child of Hope pupil who, after losing her mum, found herself caring for her younger siblings while still at school. This video follows our welfare team as they visit Mary at home and hear her story. Stories like Mary's are why Child of Hope exists. Our welfare team works hard to make sure no child falls through the cracks — and your kind sponsorship makes that possible.

It's that time of year again - for the slightly daft Child of Hope Christmas videos! There are seven short videos spread out between now and Christmas Eve, each with a verse of our children’s very own Christmas carol. Click the picture to watch the video on our website...

And now the children are preparing their party dances, because the COH slum kids Christmas Party is nearly upon us! All it takes for a great party is the equivalent cost of a dozen mince pies and a couple of glasses of mulled wine, around £5 per child!

So, this Christmas time, as you enjoy some festive fare could you also donate to our Christmas Party and bless not just our 600+ children, but their families too? (Any additional funds over our target will be used to help provide food to the children throughout the year).

It's always amazing to hear about the difference that they make in the Namatala slum. We are awestruck by the way they can change what starts as truly a life of poverty & misery - into one of love, and opportunity.

Child of Hope Uganda - Christmas Appeal 2025

 

This Christmas and throughout the year, help us provide food for all our pupils and their families from the slums of Namatala and Karamoja, Uganda.

Hunger and malnutrition are harsh daily realities for many of our pupils and their families, who are living in extreme poverty in the poorest regions of Uganda. Christmas is simply another day with too little food and a rumbly tummy. No special meal, no treats, and often no food at all.

Here at Child of Hope, we want to change that – not just at Christmas, but into the New Year and beyond.

With your help, we can provide an amazing Christmas for our pupils and their families, and also boost the funds available for our food programme into the New Year. Help feed the 5000 this Christmas - with Child of Hope, Uganda

After another year of Covid-19 lockdowns and food shortages in Namatala slum, please could you help Child of Hope Uganda give slum families a special Christmas treat?

When we did this last year, children and their families ate well on Christmas Day and Boxing Day – and they still talk about it. Since then, children have been stuck at home for the entire year; it would be fantastic to bless them all again with Christmas food.

We’ve been supporting hundreds of families throughout Covid-19 lockdowns and curfews, which have seriously reduced food availability and inflated prices. We’ve helped the entire families of our pupils, plus other desperately needy families. That’s tons and tons of maize flour, beans, salt and soap.

This year’s Christmas meal will again be rice, meat and vegetables for each family to cook at home. To feed around 5,000 people it will cost £5,000 – that’s just £1 per person.

Child Of Hope Uganda - Faith in Action & Motorcycles too!

A slum mum running a tiny business selling beans identified a possible business idea – and has now launched a successful new business selling motorbike spare parts. Better still, she has been able to employ skilled workers to do the maintenance and repair work on the bikes!

Stella Arakit, a 50 year-old mother with a family of five children and three dependants, was inspired by the increasing number of motorbike transport businesses (Boda Bodas) in the Namatala slum. She developed a business plan to start a motorbike spare parts shop to provide motor bike repair services for the local Boda Bodas. Then Stella shared her business idea with our IGA support staff, who gave her encouragement and business counselling on how to realise her dream.

Child of Hope Uganda - Christmas appeal 2022 to feed hungry families

 

This year, we would love to provide Christmas food parcels for all our pupils and their families from the Namatala slum, as well as food parcels and a Christmas party (Ebola restrictions allowing) for the pupils at our new nursery in Namalu, Karamoja. Over 650 families would benefit from your kind donations.

Most children attending the Karamoja nursery school will never have had a Christmas, so we want to give them one they won't forget!

All our pupils’ families are desperately poor, but those in Karamoja are in the poorest and most marginalised tribal group in Uganda, with living standards significantly lower than in other areas of the country. The poverty rate in Karamoja is 66%, more than three times the national poverty rate. Desperation has even forced some of them to eat leaves from the trees to stave their hunger. Our Christmas food parcels will make a massive difference to families facing a worsening malnutrition situation.

Please donate as much or as little as possible; help us make this a special Christmas for the Child of Hope children and their families. All donations are welcome; whatever you can give will be appreciated and will go a long way in helping us make this a special

Christmas Blessings from Donline!

The fabulous Child of Hope - Christmas Nativity is here! This year, the children are bringing you a selection of their favourite Christmas carols to tell the Christmas story.

We hope you enjoy the children's singing. They would love it if you could donate towards their Christmas party and food parcels, helping to ensure families have food on the table this Christmas. Most of these children live in the slums of Uganda, where daily life is a struggle, and these parcels mean so much to them.

Child of Hope Uganda - Christmas Party

Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated to our Christmas party appeal – we're well on the way to organising an amazing party, plus gifts, a slap-up meal and clothes each.

We are 40% of the way to our goal... the party costs roughly £4 per child, and there will also be parents, siblings and local VIPs.

Child of Hope slum Christmas Party 2017

Living in such extreme poverty, children of the Namatala slum don't know what it is to receive gifts and have a slap-up meal and fun at Christmas... but with your help, the children at our school can!

We lay on a wonderful meal - probably the only day of the year they get real meat – for all the children at our slum school, plus a parent for each child. There's fizzy pop, sweets, clothes, shoes and presents, too!

So, could you please help us pay for this year's party?

Child of Hope Uganda - Farming for the future

A plot of land behind the school has been converted for an ongoing project that will train our pupils in growing certain vegetables, such as potatoes, peas, beans, cabbage, egg plants and tomatoes.  

Now, thanks to a generous donation, the children will try various techniques to see which produces the best harvest and then roll up their sleeves to get muddy! They’ll learn which plants help the land and give nutrition back to the soil, how to prevent free-roaming animals spoiling the crops and the problems of waste management (plastics, etc). As a bonus, hopefully the children will be able to eat the end product!
