Thank God for Thy Kingdom Come 2018 - come Lord Jesus, come!

Dear friends, For 11 days across the UK, and in over a hundred countries from Bangladesh to South Africa, we came together in prayer.

We asked God to pour out His Holy Spirit on His united people – to empower us share the revolutionary love of Jesus Christ with our friends, our families, our communities and our nations.

You are a vital part of this movement we call Thy Kingdom Come. Thank you so much.

I’ve heard so many wonderful stories – from churches holding 24-7 prayer for the first time, to cathedrals packed with joyful crowds, to people giving their lives to Jesus after being prayed for the Thy Kingdom Come community.

And of course, what an incredible blessing it was to hear Bishop Michael Curry share the good news of Jesus with a global audience of millions in his Royal wedding sermon – before joining us for a Thy Kingdom Come event at St Albans Cathedral.

I’m filled with joy at how God is working so powerfully through this global movement of prayer. This year, it really started to feel like it was all of us. Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Methodists, Pentecostals… joining together in this one clear and joyful cry out to God: send your Holy Spirit that we might share Christ’s love! When we are united in prayer, it’s a clear sign of the Kingdom.

Another sign of the Kingdom is the compassion that is firing up the Church. That means loving and caring for the poor and struggling – and for each other. Jesus calls us to be part of a revolution of love. In our prayers, we are being drawn into the very heart of that revolution.

I’m more excited by Thy Kingdom Come than anything I can remember for many, many years. Praise be to God!

Dear friends, It has been an absolute joy to join the global wave of prayer through Thy Kingdom Come initiative.

The Holy Spirit rekindled the fire of his love in the people I met and worshipped with. Empowering, equipping and commissioning the followers of Jesus Christ to pray for others to know His love. 

Often it was the chance encounters with people I met where I saw lives transformed, as they encountered the Risen Christ and knew the power of the Holy Spirit descend on them.

Three people out of the five that I put on my prayer list at last year’s Beacon Event came to York Minster and gave their lives to Christ. What an encouragement!

I am still praying for the other two and the five I started praying for on Ascension Day. Our God is awesome!

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.

During the 11 days of Thy Kingdom Come, it is hoped that everyone who takes part will:

Deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ

Pray for God’s spirit to work in the lives of those they know

Come to realise that every aspect of their life is the stuff of prayer  

After the very first Ascension Day the disciples gathered with Mary, constantly devoting themselves to prayer while they waited for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the gift of the Holy Spirit is total – on our own we can do nothing.

Through the centuries Christians have gathered at that time to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ picks up this tradition. Over the past three years more and more worshipping communities have dedicated the days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray ‘Come Holy Spirit’.

We are praying that the Spirit would inspire and equip us to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with our friends and families, our communities and networks. It has been amazing how many varied ways there have been in which people from every tradition have taken up this challenge. The effects have been remarkable.

It is our prayer that those who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and his love for the world will hear it for themselves, and respond and follow Him. Specifically, we again invite each and every Christian across the country to pray that God’s Spirit might work in the lives of 5 friends who have not responded with their ‘Yes’ to God’s call.

Since it began in May 2016,  God has grown TKC from a dream of possibility into a movement which unites more than a million Christians in prayer, in nearly 90% of countries worldwide, across 85 different denominations and traditions- so that friends and family, neighbours and colleagues might come to faith in Jesus Christ.

Every person, household and church are encouraged to pray during the 11 days in their own way.

It is our hope & prayer, that those who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and His love for the world, will hear it for themselves and respond and follow Him.

TKC - Thy Kingdom Come 2026: God With Us

 

Thy Kingdom Come is a global ecumenical prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. This year TLC runs from Thursday 14th May (Ascension) till Sunday 24th May (Pentecost).

This year’s Thy Kingdom Come is all about the presence of God through His spirit.

The God who is with us in the everyday – in the joys and sorrows of life (and everything in between) and the One who, through His spirit, longs to reveal Himself to those who do not yet know Him.

From the story of Ruth to the story of Gideon, from the story of Elijah to the story of the early church who waited for the promised Holy Spirit to come- over the 11 days we will explore a different Bible story each day, which demonstrates God’s transformative presence, power and love at work in the lives of people and places.

Our hope is that as we pray for our five people, they will also experience the life-changing love of God and choose to follow Him.

Leading Church figures urge Christians to take part in week of Prayer

Christian leaders across the UK have today issued a joint letter encouraging Christians of all denominations to join in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which runs from 18-25th January 2019.

The letter, whose signatories include Archbishop Justin Welby (Archbishop of Canterbury); Cardinal Archbishop Vincent Nichols (Archbishop of Westminster); The Revd Michaela Youngson (President of the Methodist Conference), His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos (Coptic Archbishop of London) and Pastor Agu Irukwu (Chair of Redeemed Christian Church of God UK) – invites Christians to participate in this call to prayer with the ‘utmost seriousness.’

The letter’s central message urges Christians to ‘pray together for Christian unity, in our life together, our witness and our longing to see the Kingdom of God in the midst of our world’ and to ‘find ways to give expression to our search for greater unity in obedience to the command of Christ that we love one another,’ citing Jesus’s last prayer on unity taken from John 17.

The leaders also encourage Christians not just to pray during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity but also to get involved in Thy Kingdom Come – a global ecumenical prayer movement in which Christians pray for more people to become followers of Jesus Christ.

Thy Kingdom Come, now in its 4th year, has united over a million Christians from more than 65 different denominations and traditions, in more than 114 countries to pray for evangelisation. It takes place between Ascension to Pentecost which this year is May 30th-June 9th.

Pentecost Sunday at Portchester Castle

Concluding the 10 days of prayer that is Thy Kingdom Come, there will be an open-air ecumenical beacon prayer, worship and celebration, calling churches together from the whole of the Portsmouth Diocese Area, at Portchester Castle on Pentecost Sunday 9th June:

1 pm to 2:30 pm - The big prayer picnic with fun for families and a variety of prayer tents to visit.

2:30 pm to 4 pm - The main prayer and worship event drawing us all together as one.

Come from your morning Pentecost service to join with many churches from all over Portsmouth diocese to eat, pray and worship.

There will be parking for up to 1,000 cars in a nearby field bordering the castle.

Thy Kingdom Come, day 2. Does God "need" worship and praise?

In Christian worship there is lots of praise. Christians often tell God how brilliant God is. What sort of God needs this, is often the response from those who are new to the Christian faith? God must be very insecure, they think.

But we don’t praise God because God needs it, but because we do. When we praise God we put ourselves in perspective. We acknowledge that God is the source and origin of every-thing, even the breath that we’re taking right now. Without God, there is nothing. 

There is no one who doesn’t need to know that.

The way of life which is the way of Jesus Christ is a way of abundant, appreciative joy. Even in the darkest hours, we believe in the light. 

We praise him. And from the perspective of his light pray for others.

Faithful God, help me to understand myself, so that even in the most difficult times I may know your presence with me and may sing your praises, defiantly praising your goodness even when there is so much that is wrong. And today, help me show others the good things I receive in Christ and show the world his way.
