Windows 10: October 2018 Update now available. WinVer 1809

We recommend that you begin rolling out Windows 10, version 1809 today, in phases across your organisation, to validate that your apps, devices, and infrastructure work well with this new release before broad deployment. Microsoft resumes rollout of Windows 10 version 1809

Microsoft has resumed the rollout of Windows 10 version 1809. The re-release of the so-called October 2018 Update comes more than five weeks after the company pulled the original installation files from its download servers and stopped its scheduled delivery through Windows Update just days after its initial debut on Oct. 2.

In a blog post, Microsoft's John Cable, the director of Program Management for Windows Servicing and Delivery, says the data-destroying bug that triggered that unprecedented decision, as well as other quality issues that emerged during the unscheduled hiatus, have been "thoroughly investigated and resolved."

Windows 10 on your PC been a bit glitchy of late? Might be the return of the 1809 update bug

Microsoft has not had an easy time with its Windows 10 October Update. After having pulled the Windows 10 October update after users reported it was deleting some of their files, it re-released the update back to Insiders for further testing.

However, since then, Microsoft has found itself tackling new issues left, right and centre. Now users are reporting issues with Windows Task Manager, incompatibility issues with Intel drivers, apps being barred from connecting to the internet, audio drivers no longer working and even the dreaded blue screen of death rearing its head.

Windows 10 version 2004 is coming! Wait, what? 2004?

It's early 2020, and Microsoft is about to release... Windows 10 version 2004? No, that's not a typo, and no, we have not passed through some weird time warp to the previous decade.

Microsoft's latest Windows 10 feature update follows the same YYMM naming syntax as its predecessors (versions 1809, 1903, 1909, and so on). Microsoft targeted version 2004 for general release in April 2020 (yy=20, mm=04), making the confusing name inevitable. And let's not even talk about the even more baffling version 2009 or 2010, which will arrive in the second half of 2020! Anyway, the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, version 2004, build 19041.207, is now available for Windows Insiders in the Release Preview ring.

Microsoft pauses Windows 10 update after files disappear

Microsoft has paused the October update of its Windows 10 operating system after reports that some users found their documents disappeared once it was installed.

On its support page, the firm asks affected customers to use their device as little as possible and to phone their local helpline.

It is also asking people who have downloaded the update manually not to install it. The firm said the cases were isolated.

"Microsoft has paused the roll-out of the update while we continue to investigate reports from some customers," the firm said in a statement.

I have so far done two 1809 builds & no major issues. NB: when upgrading an operating system (and indeed always!), a backup is the right place to start...
