Elspeth Beard - Solo Adventurer Rider: 3rd November at The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre, Bordon, Hants

ELSPETH BEARD, AWARD WINNING ARCHITECT AND THE FIRST BRITISH WOMAN TO RIDE A MOTORCYCLE AROUND THE WORLD.

In 1982 at the age of 23 Elspeth set off on a solo trip to ride her 1974 R60/6 BMW motorcycle around the world. The journey took two and a half years covering 55,000 kilometres riding through North America, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and Europe. All in the age before email, the internet, mobile phones, satnavs, medevacs, and, in some parts of the world, reliable maps.

Elspeth rode through post-revolutionary Iran during the war with Iraq; survived life-threatening illnesses, and numerous accidents. She witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and she fended off physical threats, sexual attacks, biker gangs, and corrupt police who were convinced that she was trafficking drugs. She fell in and out of love three times.
