Microsoft will end Publisher support and remove it from Microsoft 365 in October 2026

Microsoft has published some big news for its Office users. Microsoft Publisher, a program for designing brochures, flyers, newsletters, posters, and other print materials, will soon reach its end of life. The company plans to end Publisher support in October 2026 and remove it from the Microsoft 365 subscription afterward.

The announcement was quietly published on the official Microsoft Support website. The company says that the reason behind the decision was to "focus on new benefits" and "provide customers with the tools they need to achieve what matters." However, no tools for you if you are a Microsoft Publisher user. The company will kill the software in less than two years.

According to the support document, most of the Publisher features for creating professionally branded templates, envelops, and label printing are already available in other Microsoft 365 applications. Therefore, you can use Word or PowerPoint as a replacement for the outgoing app. Microsoft also promises to share more as it is "exploring modern ways to achieve common Publisher scenarios" in Word, PowerPoint, and Designer.

Existing Publisher users can continue working with the app until October 2026. In that month, Microsoft will end Office 2021 LTSC support, including Publisher. As for Microsoft 365 users, the company will remove Publisher from their systems once it reaches the end of life.

Microsoft Publisher user? Not for much longer...

Microsoft has decided to retire Publisher as part of a shift toward reducing overlap and focusing innovation within Microsoft 365. Many of Publisher’s key features, such as template-based layouts, printing envelopes or labels and creating calendars or business cards are now available in other apps like Word and PowerPoint. This strategic move allows Microsoft to simplify support and development across its suite.
You’ll still be able to open, edit, and save your existing Publisher files until October 2026:
During this time, Publisher will continue to work as usual, and all your existing files will remain accessible.

After October 1, 2026, Publisher will no longer be supported and it will be removed from Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Perpetual versions (like Office LTSC 2021) also lose support at that time. Unfortunately, there’s no option to revert or re-enable Publisher once it’s retired.

Here are some steps to ensure you won’t lose access to your work:
Convert .pub files before October 2026:
PDF: Ideal for finalized designs when editing won’t be needed.
DOCX (Word): Suitable for documents you plan to edit later, note layouts may adjust.

Microsoft closes the book on Publisher and unplugs Project Online

Microsoft will retire Project Online and remove Publisher from Microsoft 365 over the coming weeks, while support for perpetual versions of Publisher and for Office 2021 will end shortly afterward.

Publisher, Microsoft's desktop publishing application, dates back to the Windows 3.x era. Microsoft announced its retirement in 2024 and will remove it from Microsoft 365 subscriptions on October 1, 2026. Support for perpetual versions will end on October 13 alongside Office LTSC 2021 and Consumer Office 2021.

Project Online will retire on September 30. The following day, Project Online Essentials – a licensing SKU that gives users limited access to Project Online and Project Server – will reach end of life. It has not been available to new customers since October 2025.

The retirement could catch out organizations that have not migrated. Essentials provides relatively inexpensive licenses for users who needed to update tasks, submit timesheets, and view project information without the broader capabilities of Microsoft's more expensive plans.

UPDATE 16 Oct 2026: The Document Foundation (TDF), one of Microsoft's open source software (OSS) rivals, has brought another solution. The firm has confirmed that it (LibreOffice) can open, view, and edit Publisher files, giving users a way to continue accessing their documents.
