40acts - give generously during Lent

How can 40acts help me during Lent? Lent is one of the most important times of year for many Christians around the world, particularly those within the Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox traditions, held at a similar level of importance to Advent – the build up to Christmas.

Different people observe Lent in different ways, though by and large most people do this by giving something up for Lent. Whether you’re intending to give up chocolate, fast food, alcohol, or the Internet, 40acts encourages you to do something generous during Lent, too. You can sign up to take the challenge here.

As well as our group resources for families, churches, small groups, schools and youth groups, we also have a whole host of prayers for Lent that you can read, as well as a list of Lent prayers for children. In order to help your children better understand this wholly significant time of year we also have a section of our website entirely dedicated to facts about Lent, from the different days of Lent to what days like Ash Wednesday mean to the wider community.

If you need any help or guidance through Lent this year, sign up for 40acts, and do Lent generously.

#LiveLent: Embracing Justice - Lent reflections from the Church of England

This Lent we are called to reflect on the injustices of the world and ask what God is calling us to do about them. Over forty days, we step into God’s work in the here and now – and in doing so we move from brokenness towards wholeness.

The six weeks of Lent are a journey. We travel together towards God’s promised world, one where his justice and mercy reign.

For many people, Lent is a time of fasting, of choosing to go without.

This Lent we are called to be speakers and seekers of justice. We reflect on the injustices of the world and ask what God is calling us to do about them. Over forty days, we step into God’s work in the here and now – and in doing so we move from brokenness towards wholeness.

Our journey through Lent is one in which we seek inner transformation to be people of a new world, people who reflect God’s vision that all are created equal.

Our prayer is that this may be a time for you – whether by yourself, in community, or online – to see afresh the vision of God and truly join in making his promise of a world transformed a reality.

#LiveLent: Embracing Justice will offer a daily Bible reading, a short reflection and a prayer, as well as a practical challenge linked to the week’s theme. An accompanying child’s version will also available to help children and their families explore how we can live well together. As in previous years, we'll be making this available via:

a free app for Apple and Android devices

free email reflections

audio on our Smart speaker skills

printed booklets through Church House Publishing

This Lent, sign up for 40acts. Let's all try to make the world better - one act at a time

40acts is the generosity challenge for Lent, created by UK Christian charity, Stewardship. For ten years, 40acts has asked a question: what if Lent could be about more than just giving stuff up? What if it could be a time of radical generosity as well as spiritual discipline? Over the years, 40acts has become a movement of over 100,000 people on a mission to impact their communities with generosity – during Lent and beyond.

In preparation: Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Following Jesus' journey through suffering and death to new life

Lent and Easter are an important part of the Christian calendar.

The season of Lent lasts for forty days (not including Sundays). It is a time when Christians reflect and prepare for the celebrations of Easter. Some people fast, eat frugally or give up treats following the example of Jesus, who fasted for forty days in the wilderness.

People also give to charity, set aside time to study the bible and meet with other Christians to reflect on Jesus' life and prepare for the events of Holy Week and Easter.

The Trussell Trust Lent Challenge: 40 for 40.

The challenge

We are asking people to join us in taking small actions to transform lives by giving up 40 pence for 40 days. With the addition of Gift Aid this comes to £20.

Or if you feel like challenging yourself to give something up during this period, why not donate the cost of what you save towards The Trussell Trust?

What is Lent?

Lent is the period of 40 days leading up to Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and is seen as a time of reflection where most people choose to give something up or try something new to mark the occasion.

Keep your eyes fixed on God, on the path to Christmas - with Advent reflections

Advent marks the beginning of the church year. It is a time for reflection in darkness, for renewal of hope and for a movement towards a beginning.

The season of Advent, as it first emerged in the Church in the fourth and fifth centuries, lasted, like Lent, for 40 days. Later tradition developed the Advent we know today, of four Sundays before Christmas Day.

It is a season of expectation and preparation as the Church prepares to celebrate the coming of Christ. Church decorations are simple and sparse, and purple is the traditional colour used. Advent falls at the darkest time of the year, and the natural symbols of darkness and light are powerfully at work throughout Advent and Christmas.

Click here for Advent reflections from the CoE. Also here is a Spotify playlist #FollowTheStar 2019 which will help to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Lent starts this week. Fasting: what does the Bible say?

Scripture does not command Christians to fast. God does not require or demand it of Christians. At the same time, the Bible presents fasting as something that is good, profitable, and beneficial.

The book of Acts records believers fasting before they made important decisions (Acts 13:2; 14:23). Fasting and prayer are often linked together (Luke 2:37; 5:33). Too often, the focus of fasting is on the lack of food. Instead, the purpose of fasting should be to take your eyes off the things of this world to focus completely on God

Fasting is a way to demonstrate to God, and to ourselves, that we are serious about our relationship with Him. Fasting helps us gain a new perspective and a renewed reliance upon God.

Walk with Jesus using the Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross are an ancient form of Christian devotion, inviting us on a virtual pilgrimage in Jesus’ footsteps, recalling and reflecting on key moments on his journey to the cross.

Commonly, a series of 14 images will be arranged in numbered order along a path and the faithful travel from image to image, in order, stopping at each station to say the selected prayers and reflections. This will be done individually or in a procession most commonly during Lent, especially on Good Friday, in a spirit of reparation for the sufferings and insults that Jesus endured during his passion.

Experience the Stations of the Cross virtually: We may not be able to do the Stations of the Cross outside, but why not try this wonderful virtual version created by media ministry called, Busted Halo?
